Big media doesn’t understand social networking: Another Example

Al Roker just encouraged the tv audience watching the Macy’s parade that they should “check in on Foursquare to try to become the mayor of the parade.”

Could have sworn Foursquare was location based.

That’s the gray area of “location”. Do I check into Times Square or the parade? Do I check into the fairgrounds or Lalapalooza? I know one is the event and the other is the location but to many non-detailed-detailed oriented people there is no difference; “I’m at the parade”. I think location based social media needs both where and why. Both location and event. That might make it more clear to the Al Rokers of the world.

Really good point, and reinforced by the fact that i saw someone check into Blackbaud at 6am this morning. When i made a comment about her being an “early bird”, the response was “there’s not a place for the Blackbaud gym.”

What is interesting about Al’s comment, however, is that no one was going to become the mayor even by checking into the parade once. In theory, you’d have to continually check into the “event” even after it’s completed in order to become the mayor. Someone at Macy’s NYC for the first time is not going to become the mayor of the parade with one check-in.

    Excellent point, Jeff!
