One of the key responsibilities of the Product Manager is to ensure more is delivered than was expected by customers, business units or other constituents. PM’s have the ability to set expectations as well as drive delivery so in theory this should never really be an issue.
The founder of my last company had a formula that looks something like this:
Delivery – Expectations = Satisfaction
You don’t ever want the equation to come out negative. George Washington writes in Rules of Civility
Undertake not what you cannot perform but be careful to keep your promise.
Quietly solve the problems that make an impact for your market. Optimization is fine, as long as it’s moving the needle for existing customers, creating more references.
